How Romulus works

Software, based on applied mathematics and machine learning, that non-invasively assesses the respiratory system — in outpatients and in mechanically ventilated patients.

1. Tiny pressure perturbations

Small pressure perturbations are applied at the mouth (sub-5 Hz respiratory oscillometry), during spontaneous breathing or mechanical ventilation. Minimal and barely noticeable to the patient.

2. A second signal: sEMG

Alongside the pressure signal, Romulus is extending to surface-EMG (sEMG) measurement of diaphragm activity — a second, complementary window into respiratory effort.

3. Data-driven modeling

Advanced data-driven and mechanistic modeling extracts key mechanical properties of the whole respiratory system — tissue stiffness, airway resistance, and more — throughout the full treatment trajectory.

4. Faster, better-informed decisions

Physicians get information to make faster, better-informed treatment decisions and detect complications earlier — aiming for shorter, safer, more effective care.

Delivered as a software add-on

Romulus is sold as a software add-on to the mechanical ventilator itself — no dedicated hardware device, no separate electrode belt. It's designed to fit into existing clinical workflow, not add to it.
